An IT auditor is responsible for the internal controls and risks of a company’s technology network. This role includes identifying the weeknesses in a systems network and creating an action plan to prevent security breeches in the technology. An IT auditor can also be involved in the planning and execution of internal audit procedures and the creation of internal audit reports. An auditor must work within a team to create a solid information technology infrastructure, and collaborate with clients to devise and put in place policies and procedures regarding network security issues.
IT auditors typically have a bachelor degrec in information technology and information systems. An IT auditor should develop solid communication skills to not only understand technical jargon, but to translate technical jargon into business-related decisions for management and clients. Patience and an ability to teach is a plus, as much of information
technology is learned on the job and requires iraparting knowledge to others in the company work environment. IT auditors should also have a high absorption rate for understanding new technologies. Industry trends change quickly, vhich requires efforts by those ¡n the field to keep up.
Depending on the employer and area of specialization, some type of certification can help individuals secure employment. Certified Infornation Systems Auditor, or CISA, is the widely recognized standard certification for IT auditors and includes information security, audit, control and assurance professionals. Certified Information Systems Security Professional, or CISSP, recognizes an individuals information security knowledge. Other recognized certifications include Certified Infornation Security Manager and Microsoft Ceitified Systems Engineer.
IT aiditor managers should possess at least a bachelor’s degree in IT-related field.
